Many people are concerned of how they look. Many think they are too fat or thin. But how do we exactly determine if we have healthy weight or figure out our body mass?
In the 19th century, Adolphe Quetelet designed the Body Mass Index or BMI calculator to determine the body mass. It is a calculator used to find out if a person is healthy based on his weight and height. There is also an urban legend that has its origin at the American insurance. Actually, they are simply using the BMI to calculate the health risk of a person. BMI has been around for almost 200 years since its creation and is still used today like it was before.
You must keep in mind that BMI is not conclusive in determining if a person is at a healthy weight or not. Rather it is the tool that is commonly used to determine if a person is overweight or otherwise. You must also understand that BMI doesn’t distinguish the weight of a person from muscles and the weight from fat. Therefore BMI treats the weight of a bodybuilder the same way as that of a fat person. However, BMI is proven to be accurate in determining whether an average person (who doesn’t exercise on a regular basis) is underweight, normal weight, or overweight.
It is actually not difficult to calculate one’s BMI as long as you know the formula, which is very simple. It is weight divided by height squared or kg/m2. As an illustration, if a female or male who stands 5 feet 10 inches is 1.778 meters tall. In order to get the m2 (height squared), 1.778 should be multiplied by 1.778 which equals 3.168. If that person weighs 70 kilograms and stands 1.778 meters, the BMI of that person is 70 kg (weight) divided by 3.168 meters (height squared) equals 22.095. This means that this person has normal health weight.
This is so because a BMI of 18.9 or below indicates that the person is underweight. The normal weight is between 19 – 24.9. So a person who stands 5’10’ tall and weighs 70 kilograms has normal weight. Overweight people have BMI of 25 – 29.9 and those who are considered obese have a BMI of 30 or over. By using a BMI calculator, you could determine if you are underweight, normal, overweight or obese. If you have a BMI of 32, you are considered obese but not too much. You only have to lose 2.1 kilograms to become overweight and about 7.1 kilograms to have normal weight.
If you are not sure how much weight you should lose, it is best to use BMI calculator that you can find here or get help from someone who can help you on your diet and achieve the healthy weight range.
